- It’s been such a long time.
- I think it’s been almost four months since I last turned on the camera.
- I’m here in Changbakgol, Anyang.
- Sometimes people ask me why my YouTube name is Changbakgol,
- and the reason is that
- I went to Anyang Seo Middle School, which is located right here in Changbakgol.
- I have some great memories from hanging out here, and I also liked how the name rolls off the tongue, so I decided to call myself Changbakgol.
- Right now, I’m on my way to Changbakgol Reservoir Sports Park, where I’m going to film today’s video.
- (It’s quite a climb)
- The weather has been insane lately.
- It’s even hotter than Africa.
- There’s a futsal court here, and unusually, it’s free.
- So when I was in middle school,
- I used to come here all the time to play soccer.
- But it’s quiet today.
- So the reason I came to Changbakgol today is because
- about a month ago,
- I made a post, right?
- A lot of people saw that post
- and showed me a lot of support and interest.
- And today, finally,
- the jerseys of the third-division team in Malawi, Africa, that I’m going to become the owner of have arrived.
- These jerseys will go on sale starting today,
- and I also wanted to introduce you to the project.
- I didn’t really want to just do this at home,
- so I’m here at the beautiful Changbakgol Reservoir Sports Park.
- First of all, the team I’m going to become the owner of
- is based on a very small island called Chizumulu Island,
- located in the middle of Lake Malawi in Africa.
- The team is called Chizumulu United.
- When I went there last year,
- I think many of you may not know
- what it was like there,
- so I’ll show you some footage for a moment.
- (To get to the ferry, we traveled in a small boat and rowed our way there)
- (Countless people are lying on the deck with barely any room to move)
- Personally, I love football.
- That love is what keeps me moving despite all the difficulties.
- Just like Son Heung-min from Korea, who is playing in the Premier League right now,
- I want to make our Chizumulu United widely known.
- First of all, we don’t even have our own jerseys, so we have to borrow them from other teams.
- The players wear plastic football boots or torn ones,
- and we’re short on footballs and training kits as well.
- Instead of proper training cones, we use empty plastic bottles.
- There are no training allowances or match bonuses.
- Our main goal
- is to get promoted to the Super League someday,
- so that the people on the island can watch us on their screens.
- You know those famous teams in the Malawi Super League,
- like Silver Strikers?
- We want those teams to come here for away games,
- on that same exact MV Ilala that we always take.
- (Almost 30 people all piled into this truck)
- (Even through all these hardships, the players smile and sing)
- (An absolutely beautiful smooth pass)
- (Chizumulu takes a 2-0 lead with a brace from No. 7)
- I was really moved and humbled by you coming here.
- I think we won those two games because of the motivation you gave us.
- You didn’t provide us with any material support,
- but just having you here
- gave us so much strength.
- Without you, we might have lost all three games.
- But because you’re here with us,
- we have this mindset that
- we’re going to make it.
- Lastly, please don’t forget us.
- Even after you go back, come visit us again whenever you have the time.
- Thank you.
- I’ve actually traveled to quite a lot of countries, around 20 or so,
- but I’d never seen an environment this difficult.
- And since I spent quite a lot of time with this team,
- even staying and eating together,
- after I returned to Korea, I kept in touch with the coaches
- and some of the players.
- But this season, which kicked off in June this year, about a month before the season started,
- the coach told me that they didn’t have the roughly 400,000 won registration fee,
- so they probably wouldn’t be able to participate in the league this year.
- When I realized that the coaches thought they couldn’t participate in the league anymore,
- I felt really strange about it.
- But after I paid it for them,
- I realized that paying the registration fee would only provide temporary help.
- In the long term, it wouldn’t really help,
- or it might even make things worse.
- So instead, I thought,
- "Why don't I become the owner and actually try running this team?"
- I think that’s how I came to this decision.
- Becoming the owner of this team isn’t simply about
- helping them like a charity organization.
- I’m actually going to own the club,
- handle the team’s administrative work,
- make the decisions that need to be made for the team,
- bring in sponsorships and handle promotion,
- and take on all the other responsibilities that come with being a club owner.
- I can’t guarantee anything, but within my capabilities,
- I’m going to do everything I can
- to help this team and its players develop.
- I’ve already discussed taking on ownership of the team
- with both the team and the Football Association of Malawi.
- At the end of this month, at the end of July,
- I’m going to fly to Malawi and officially register as the club owner.
- But if I’m going to become the owner
- and run the team,
- I need money, right?
- I’m still a university student and I don’t have a lot of money,
- so I was thinking about what I could do.
- I decided to make jerseys for the team,
- sell them domestically,
- and use the proceeds to establish some basic operating funds.
- So thankfully, in the end,
- we were able to raise some initial funds.
- And thankfully,
- someone agreed to take care of the jersey design for us,
- so I’d like to introduce the design to you one by one.
- We stylized the shape of Chizumulu Island
- and incorporated it into the design.
- The actual shape of Chizumulu Island really does look like this pattern.
- It’s inspired by the fishing nets used by the island’s residents.
- Pink represents the sunset, while light blue represents dawn,
- expressing Chizumulu United’s new challenge.
- And this is what the back of the jersey looks like.
- The number will go in the center,
- and as for the various sponsors who helped us get this project started,
- you can check them out in the video description.
- I’ve included links with more details for each sponsor,
- so I’d really appreciate it if you could check them out.
- But there’s one thing I want to highlight today.
- Chizumulu United’s kit sponsor is Deépo.
- Deépo is a sports lifestyle brand,
- and they have a lot of experience producing equipment and merchandise for various professional sports clubs.
- Thankfully, Deépo has provided the entire Chizumulu United squad
- with complete home and away kits, free of charge.
- Once you include the home, away, and goalkeeper kits,
- that’s nearly 50 sets in total,
- so the cost is no joke.
- I’m incredibly grateful that they were willing to help us like this.
- The jerseys are also made with the same fabric
- used by professional clubs, so the quality is really good.
- And the logo isn’t simply printed on.
- It’s attached separately with silicone.
- As for the price of the jersey,
- it actually should have been priced a little higher,
- but Deépo wanted more people to wear the jersey
- and support Chizumulu United,
- so they very kindly decided to offer a special discount.
- During the pre-order period starting today,
- it will be sold for 54,000 won, discounted from the regular price of 90,000 won.
- The pre-order period runs from today
- until next Thursday at 2 p.m.
- You can purchase one after creating an account.
- For the shirt number, you can choose any number from 0 to 99,
- with an additional customization fee of 10,000 won.
- A large portion of the proceeds from jersey sales
- will go back to Chizumulu United,
- so if you like the design and think the price is reasonable,
- I’d be incredibly grateful if you could buy one.
- On the front, it says “Chizumulu United,”
- and on the back, there’s a phrase in the local Chichewa language
- that means “Fight until the end and win.”
- As for this scarf,
- one of our sponsors, Brandbay,
- sponsored 300 of them,
- and we’re planning to sell 250 of them here in Korea.
- The scarves cost 25,000 won each,
- and if you purchase one,
- the full 25,000 won goes directly
- to Chizumulu United.
- So I’d really appreciate your support.
- If you fill out the form in the description or pinned comment,
- I’ll personally pack it and send it to you.
- That’s everything I wanted to share with you today.
- Malawi’s third division may be considered a very low-level league,
- but as a university student who is still in college,
- and as a huge Football Manager fan,
- I’m incredibly excited to have this opportunity
- to actually run a football club.
- At the same time, it’s also a little intimidating.
- I haven’t been back to Malawi since deciding to become the owner,
- so I’m sure there will be a lot of challenges,
- but I’ll do my absolute best
- to show you as much of this journey as I can.
- The story of Chizumulu United will start coming out
- from August, when I arrive in Malawi.
- Until then, on Instagram,
- I’d really appreciate your continued interest and support.
- Well, thank you so much for watching today’s video.
- I’ll see you next time.
Becoming the Owner of an African Football Club — The Chizumulu United Origin Story
2025-07-11 · Changbakgol
The Chizumulu TV chairman explains how he decided to become owner of Chizumulu United, a third-division club on Chizumulu Island in Lake Malawi, and unveils the club's first official jersey ahead of taking over.
View Summary
The chairman explains how a spontaneous decision turned into ownership of Chizumulu United, a struggling third-division club on Chizumulu Island. He recaps the club's threadbare conditions — no jerseys, worn-out boots, plastic-bottle training cones — and the moment the coach admitted the team might miss the season over an unpaid registration fee. That's when he decided a one-off donation wasn't enough and formal ownership was the better long-term answer. The video closes with the reveal of the club's first official jersey, designed around the shape of Chizumulu Island and the local fishing nets, produced free of charge by kit sponsor Deépo, with proceeds from sales going back to the club.
